7 Reasons that make Moulton the Most Comfortable Bicycles in the World
Moulton's all carry the legacy of Mr Alex Moulton, British engineering design genius.
He saw no reason why bicycles should look and perform the way they do, so he completely re-invented them. To this day, you will not find an bicycle that combines speed, performance, stability and comfort as well as a Moulton
Moulton bicycles have a unique construction. Delicate looking, lightweight, even frail in appearance, their elegance belies inherent strength and rigidity - and comfort. But it is not just the frame that makes these iconic bicycles comfortable, the whole engineering concept results in bicycles that make riding a completely joyous experience.
In this article, we explore 7 Reasons That Make Moulton The Most Comfortable Bicycles In The World
Reason #1 – Space Frame: A Design Like No Other
Bicycle frame stiffness is a key element of performance. Lateral rigidity is vital, as any of the rider's energy spent flexing a frame is lost. A stiff frame also ensures accurate wheel tracking for secure road holding and cornering stability.
The unique Moulton Space Frame, a highly engineered lattice of small diameter tubes, is far stiffer than a conventional diamond frame found on normal bike designs.
First conceived in 1977, the novel design of the Space Frame has withstood the test of time.
This frame architecture fits riders of all sizes and the low step-through allows the bike to be mounted with ease by both sexes. The low weight and high stiffness of the Moulton frame produces a ride that is lively and amazingly efficient.
The uniqueness of the Space Frame requires painstaking attention to detail when welding which makes the Space Frame a very difficult frame to copy as well. Available in separable and non-separable and standard chromoly or aerospace stainless steel tubing, many consider the Space Frame a work of art.
Reason #2 - Separable and Adaptable
All Moulton bicycles are inherently more compact when compared to conventional bikes and most feature separable frames for storage or transport. This separability introduces no compromises other than a little extra weight; there is no loss of stiffness or ride quality.
When disassembled, the two halves of a Moulton fit easily in the boot of a car or travel case and takes no more than 3 minutes. The New Series Moulton bikes separate further into five parts for even more compact stowage and airline transport.

REASON # 3 - Full Suspension Comfort
One of the distinctive features that surprise the casual observer is the fact that every Moulton frame has a full suspension system.
In order to accommodate the hard ride of the ultra-rigid frame, strong wheels and high pressure tyres, full suspension has been a mandatory feature of all Moulton bicycles. This coupling of advanced suspension and small wheels provides superior comfort and road holding.
Moulton bicycle suspension has been continually developed for over 40 years, constantly refined to maximise rider comfort and efficiency. The key feature of shock isolation allows the Moulton rider able to ride for long distances under different road conditions knowing that the front and rear suspension will work to ease out the bumps and ruts on the road.
Even the most basic Moulton uses a dry cone rubber suspension and a leading link front fork that requires no maintenance. The Hydrolastic® suspension on the New Series Moultons features a rubber spring with adjustable fluid damping. The Flexitor® front suspension system utilizes rubber in torsion, eliminating lubrication, wear, and 'stiction.' This provides unparalleled shock isolation and a uniquely silky ride.
REASON # 4 - Touring Proven
From the beginning the Moulton Bicycle has been widely acclaimed as the best touring bicycle in the world. Its design has ample capacity for carrying and the low centre of gravity and suspension make it stable at high speed even when fully loaded.
The immensely strong compact wheels are far longer lasting than conventional wheels, and their small size means that spare tyres and tubes take up less room. Frame separation is an extremely useful feature, making the Moulton easy to put on buses and trains, or secure in a hotel room.
Above all, however, it is the comfort, efficiency and secure handling of the Moulton which make it a pleasure to ride, particularly on long journeys.

REASON # 5 – A History Of Innovation
Dr Alex Moulton pioneered the small wheeled bicycle revolution more than 50 years ago. All of today’s small wheeled bikes can pay tribute to the original Moulton ‘F’ frame design which not only introduced and proved the concept of full-size bicycles with small wheels, but also, right from launch in 1962, have used front and rear suspension systems for improved comfort and performance. The Moulton bicycle has been developed and refined constantly ever since and is held in high regard throughout the world.
“The Moulton bicycle was born out of my resolve to challenge and improve upon the classic bicycle, with its diamond frame and large wheels, which has locked bicycle design into that form since the pioneering work in England of Starley and others at the end of the 19th century” Sir Alex Moulton
Moulton bicycles of today are of different appearance and construction to the original models, the ethos of improved ride comfort, high performance, convenience and practicality in use is still the same.
Some of the Moulton innovations include the unique ‘Wishbone’ adjustable handlebar stem on the Jubilee model introduced on the 25th anniversary of the Moulton bicycle in 1987.
In 1992 saw another significant development with the introduction of the Moulton APB (All Purpose Bicycle), manufactured under licence by Pashley Cycles in Stratford-upon-Avon. The APB, developed from the AM-ATB, was, as it name suggested, for the rider in city, town or country; on good roads or bad. By utilising a simplified frame design and streamlined manufacturing techniques all the advantages of the Moulton system became available at a much lower price and available for the masses.
In 1998 the New Series Moulton was launched which was equipped with a radical new suspension system and benefited from further weight-saving making a faster and more comfortable performance machine. Whilst sharing the architecture of the now legendary AM series, the flexitor and hydrolastic suspension systems of the NS offer increased refinement and improved ride comfort.
REASON # 6 – A Global Community
The unique design and performance pedigree of the Moulton has become so widely respected and enjoyed. Today the club has members from around the globe, many of whom meet and camp at Bradford-on-Avon for the annual ‘Moulton Weekend’ each September. Similar events are organised by Moulton distributors in Japan and Taiwan.
The club regularly publish the ‘Moultoneer’ magazine to keep devotees up to date with Moulton news and to provide useful information on Moulton preservation. For more information on the club visit the Moulton bicycle club.
Reason #7 – A Heritage of Craftsmanship and Engineering
Moulton bikes have always been designed and manufactured in the UK. As a brilliant engineer and inventor, Sir Alex Moulton had led the way forward in bicycle innovation and manufacture.
From the early F frame models that were launched in the 60s to the current Space Frame models today, one thing that has remained unchanged for more than five decades is the common theme of British design and that the bikes are made in Britain.
The Moulton’s frame and forks are hand-brazed in the UK by our small team of highly skilled craftsmen. Its unique construction demands special jigs and fixtures designed and made in-house, as are the Moulton suspension systems and other Moulton parts.
Moulton frames are designed to last, with many bicycles having been ridden for over 50 000 miles. The high level of workmanship, together with fatigue reducing suspension, ensure that the bicycles maintain their performance and value for many years.
And in the era of mass production, the Moulton stands out as a class above with the attention to detail, handcraftsmanship and fine engineering rarely found today.
